Applegate Valley Wine Tour

Life has a tendency to slow down a pace or two in the Applegate Valley, a remote river valley in a region historically known more for gold than grapes!

Starting at Woodridge Creek where the first grapevines were planted in the 1970's. You will find the most pleasant indoor and outdoor seating areas to enhance the ambiance of the tasting room at Wooldridge. The vineyards have expanded  to 56 acres planted in twelve varieties of wine grapes. I have come to love rose wine and the Wooldridge Creek 2012 rose does not disappoint, dry and crisp with a clear color that reminds me of dogwood blossoms.

Our next stop was the warm and welcoming Red Lily Vineyards, just a few miles from Ruch on Highway 238. The tasting room is quite tasty, with custom wooden displays housing their signature Tempranillo, chic pedant lighting, also featuring

local artist Cheryl Garcia's fabulous metal sculptures outside on the lawn and inside on the rustic cabinet by the cosy fireplace.

Next on our itinerary is COWHORN, the regions only certified organic and biodynamic estate winery. "Using state-of-the-art technology, winemakers Bill and Barbara Steele gently nudge native yeast through the fermentation process on a mission to make fine wine with few inputs, going from grapes to glass as purely as possible."

The new upstairs tasting lounge is naturally lit and tastefully decorated with a "conversation-pit" style seating arrangement, very nice for a winter tasting, but during the summer months, we love to taste their delicious varietals on the cool concrete slab in the wine making room downstairs.

The Applegate Valley Wine Trail is a terrific resource for everything you will need to know, where to stay, etc. when wine-touring in Southern Oregon a relatively new wine region that shares qualities comparable to the world-renowned Chateauneuf-du-Pape region of Frances' southern Rhone Valley.
Our last stop of the day was Dancin Vineyards, a family owned artisan winery, dedicated to growing and producing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. With a fabulous view of Mt. McLoughlin in the distance,

Dancin is one of the only kid-friendly wineries we know of, offering juice, cheese n'crackers for the little ones.

There is nothing like an afternoon spent with friends touring Southern Oregon wine country!
