Richard Patrick Light - In Memoriam 1942-2012

A Memorial service was held in Glen Park, in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California on July 31, 2012.

We had a paddle out to his favorite surf spot "suck-outs" at Cardiff Reef on August 1, 2012.
August 2011 on the "TJ shuttle" with Rob A.
‎"For what is it to die, but to stand in the sun and melt into the wind?
And when the earth has claimed our limbs, then shall we truly dance."

- Khalil Gibran

My father, Pat Light, went to his final rest in Mexico last week. He was a good hearted guy that loved surfing in warm waters. He was purple heart award veteran of the Viet Nam war.
We always enjoyed spending time at the pool or the beach together.
He was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.

Pat with Cousin Kim, this is his sister Susan's daughter.

  2. I miss you, Dad. I bow to your parents for bringing you into the world so I could emerge one day as a sprout, as a flower on the ancestral trunk. May you be at home wherever you are on the Beach of Stars, on the shimmering sands.

  3. My dad was a big fan of Jimi Hendrix. I'll always remember the first time I listened to "Are You Experienced". It was playing (on tape) in a big ol' convertible, we were driving to Disneyland after virtually kidnapping my baby sister Roz.

  4. I am so sorry for your loss Joy. I remember when my Dad passed, and it seems like the grief just takes over your life. But the days will get better and the memories will make you smile more than cry.

  7. You are right Joy Pat loved Jimi. The 3 of us are horses..very sensitive also intuitaive. He liked that Jimi was in the service albeit a short time...he would often Quote Jimi and I thought more of him for recognizing Jimis oft overlooked gift as a writer. Pat would walk up to me and say.."You'll never hear surf music again"..He also Liked Dylan or as he called him Dielin....Pat would always look for the funny less serious side of things. One thing I can say about Pat is I knew him ..I really knew him. We both had our demons..he had V N and I had My own battle. Pat was above all a compassionate kook...I mean Man. I think having gone thru hard times himself he would often reach out to me and try and help. He was a loyal friend and made a huge impact on me. Another thing about Pat. Whatever pat did he did it real good. I remember we both worked for a time at a call center and he was top dog..week in and week out...oh and another thing..the guy had ALOT OF FONZIE in him I mean he was smooth as silk with the ladies ..and they loved him. Pat was the best chef I ever knew...we all know he was a fucking god in the kitchen. But what i think I miss the most is how he would say something like.."Get over it ..kook" and in some funny way..in that instant you would see his wisdom..his sense of humour..his caring ..and his need to be the good father..the one he never had. I talked in depth with Pat about EVERYTHING under the moon and stars and I know that toward the end of his life he had opened up and was more open minded to a spiritual way of life. He sent me quotes from Paramahansa Yogananda and Pat recognized him as a great man. I know in my heart of hearts that Pat is being comforted by Master. I will continue to pray for you my sweet friend..also Pat got some great waves before he died and that is very important to know..that he was a surfer and that we are from the same tribe and that i promise to remember you Pat forever. You will always be in my heart. You were truly the sweetest man i have ever known..a real stand up guy..the kind of guy that when you think about him a big smile comes over your heart.

  9. Pat was not only a friend but like a father to me. He took me under his wing while i was in the Marine Corp. I lived with FEAR and the WHIP for a couple of years. He called me "Hiemz" because I was very frugal and cheap. Your father always treated me like family, there will never be another FEAR. I'm sorry for your loss. I loved pat, he was my friend.
